Pull cord light switch

Hi, the string on my pull cord light switch has broken and now I have to change the switch, but I'm not sure where the wires go because the new switch is different in design to the old one. I've got a red wire and a black wire. The new switch has holes for A1, A2 and COM. Does the red wire go in COM, and the black wire go in A1? Hope you can help.

doesnt matter, just don't use a2

Why not just replace the chord ?

Bathroom cord is black as night - have used several detergents to scrub it clean but no good - where can I purchase just the pull cord itself without a decorative knob !!

The bit of string is just nylon cord with a knot at each end to hold it into the plastic bits. You can buy nylon cord at your hardware store or furnishings fabric dealers.
