On my newly acquired cooker hood, there is a power lead which emerges into a plastic box, inside which is a terminal block. The wire then emerges from the other side of the plastic box.
What is the relevance of the plastic box and terminal block?

If there is a flexible cord hanging outside the hood and going to the connector, and the wires from the cooker hood motor/lamps/internal switch connect to it in the block, then the purpose of the block is probably so that you can attach a longer flexible cord if your hood is not being fitted close to an outlet, without having to open the casing and get at the internal wiring.
