hi,
can anyone help advise. we are looking to tile our bathroom floor, using natural stone tiles (probably a 12mm travertine). would P5 chipboard 18mm be sufficient flooring to lay these tiles on or would i need to go down the ply board route which of course is expensive.

thanks

The 18mm chipboard will not be sufficient for natural stone.

Either rip it up and replace with 25mm WBP ply screwed to joists with nogging at all joints. Or bed 12mm Aquapanel into the chipboard with rapidset flexible tile adhesive and screwed every 200mm then tile onto that with flexi adhesive & grout.

Hi

Why is the chipboard insufficient in this case? We are looking to lay natural stone in our new upstairs extension and the 'floor' is the treated 18m T&G chipboard. Is it not strong enough? Ir is it that despite being treated, its not moisture resistant enough? Any comments would help!

Cheers

Natural stone needs more support than ceramics or porcelain, even 22mm chipboard would not be upto the job. If you had any forethought you should have spec'd 25mm WBP ply in the bathrooms with noggins under all joints.

The treated chipboard will deteriorate a lot faster than WBP ply if it becomes wet so another reason to go with ply.
