Water business

With all this water business going on the drought, hose pipe bans, water meters etc.

Surely there must be a way to use rain water to flush the toilets, i'm thinking along the line of if you have a ground floor wc which would normally be with an exterior wall, could you have a water butt or tank collecting rain water and when you flush the toilet the cistern(toilet tank) suck in the rain water from the butt??

any ideas/thoughts? or better even tried & tested solutions?

but what do you do when its a drought?

average water butt = 40 gallons, average flush 2 gallons, what happens at flush 21?

also although it may sound a good idea, you are actualy water harvesting which if everyone did it would do everyone no good

heh, drought, try telling my neighbour that, he's had a sprinkler on his newly turfed front lawn for the last 2 weeks practically non-stop, even in the rain.

Crafty, thats fine. We have too much water in Yorkshire. You should leave your taps running to stop the reservoirs over flowing

Rainwater harvesting is used frequently on new builds who want to earn green points. They work on using the water as additional to mains supply so in drought times you have backup of the mains supply after the reserve is depleted.
Its not a cheap thing to install and requires a maintained pump and filter system.
