eco-balls and sludge

Since buying our new washing machine last year we have only used eco balls, no washing powder or conditioner. Our clothes are great and just as clean as if we had poured boxes and boxes of powder down the drain.

There is however just one little problem......

....there is a layer of brown sludge forming inside the drum. It can be seen when the door is open by looking down by the door seal.

How can I get rid of this please? Sometimes it gets onto the clothes and means they need to be re-washed. Not sure if the eco-balls are to fault here of if its the water supply.

Any advice?

Thanks
