Is it necessary to use tile paint for this job or would gloss paint do just as well, not as many available colours in the tile paint. Or is there any other alternative paint.

why do you suppose gloss paint is called gloss paint and tile paint is called tile paint?

if you really want to do it try one in an odd area

As long as you use a tile primer, you should be o.k with a solvent based gloss over the top.
I used Wickes water based Tile Primer and Self Undercoating Crown Solo Satin on top which has turned out a big success.

my advice is re-tile.

tile paint in my opinion has only limited success.

in areas where vigourous cleaning is essential, usually splash backs, the tile paint soon becomes tatty.
