W/M stopped working, burnt smell

I washed a load of clothes and the next morning noticed there was still water in it and it was stopped on the spin cycle. I then heard it attempt to kick into the spin cycle to no avail. I smelled a slightly burnt smell. Now my machine will not do anything. I checked the belt and it is intact.

my machine is a Maytag Performa model #PAV2200AWW

I believe the correct model number is PAV*******. I would concentrate on getting in to drain first. The washer has to drain before it can spin. I would check for a kinked drain hose first. Does your motor start up at all? Will the washer work in any other capacity?

You are correct, i just made a typo. I did get all of the water out. The washer will not work on any cycle. At first, I could hear a buzz noise and nothing happened. Now I don't hear anything and nothing happens (on any cycle). When I heard the buzz noise is when I would smell the burnt smell.

Sounds a bit like the motor brushes have burnt out. Get an electrician to check.

So I guess motor brushes are difficult to replace Jon? I wonder how expensive they are? Someone has offered me a free older one that is approximately 1 hours drive away...sound like I better take them up on it.

It does sound like your motor is burned out. If it was humming before that would kind of rule out a bad lid switch, which would make the washer dead. I'm thinking if the motor kept trying to start, it has now burned out. One thing else about these washers is, the motor pulley used in these is a plastic pulley and they can wear and start to slip on the belt. This is something else you to check out if you replace the motor. If the washer does hum again, you could lean the washer back and slip off the belt to see if the motor will run on its own. That way you would eliminate a frozen pulley anywhere. If all you get is a hum with no belt connected, your motor, most likely needs replacing.

I did as you advised Handyman...I took the belt off and it doesn't even make a noise...burnt motor, I guess.

Since you had the humming earlier with the motor, you can pretty much rule out a bad timer contact or the such because the motor was getting power to it, just not operating. Unfortunately, a bad motor would be my guess too.

I'm thinking that by it trying to kick in to the rinse or spin mode, all night, it did burn up the motor.
