I would like to render on top of uneven stone
what is the best way to do this and will I need any meshing,to keep the render to hold on.

Two or 3 scratch coats should bring the wall out flat.

yeah a couple of scratch coats will level out, regarding mesh depends on what render your using.

I use it every time with basecoat
