My Hotpoint WD71 washer/dryer has developed a mind of its own! Actually I think its about to be taken to the dump. Halfway through a 40 deg programme, it switches to a 50 deg ( or so the display says ), sometimes acompanied by a groaning noise. The display sometimes disappears altogether, then reappears with every symbol possible! Any ideas before it wends its way to the tip would be appretiated

sounds like eeprom trouble. This is the chip on the electronic control panel which carries out the order of the wash programmes. May be changeable and reprogrammed by white goods tech or may just replace complete electronic panel. Either way not going to be cheap.
