I have seen a number of computer generated circuit diagrams, normally lighting. What is the standard software for producing these?

Eagle is pretty standard - the full version isnt cheap though - and its hard to get used to, but is really good. http://www.cadsoftusa.com/

if you just wan't to draw diagrams for human consumption then any decent drawing package (corel draw, visio etc) should be fine.
if you wan't to actually perform analysis or schematic capture based PCB design then you will need to use special software intended for that purpose.
