Could you please tell me is it possible to replace the odd spindle here and there or can they only be fitted in sequence

usually yes, you can replace then in any order. Basically there is usually a filler piece inserted between each spindle. Remove the old spindle, remove the fillet, replace spindle, replace fillet. You can even get new spindles moulded to the same profile as the originals.
