Hi, I have an old "gloworm Hideaway 50" central heating gas boiler which is now pretty ancient. The problem is I can get hot water ok, but no heat to the radiators - I have felt the pipes by the boiler and they are boiling hot right up to the pump (then it goes cold)...I have changed between the 3 pump settings but to no avail. Does anyone know where I can get a new pump from and how much it should cost me to get a plumber in to change the pump. I don't know what type of pump it is - any ideas (Serial Number/Type etc..) Help would be greatly appreciated - Thank you.

Don't worry about the details - the plumber will do that. Your problem is finding a decent plumber! When phoning up, describe the situation to him and see what he says. A competent plumber/heating engineer would first question whether the pump actually needs replacing!

Chances are the pump is stuck and may just need freeing, but if it does need a new pump expect to pay up to £50 for this, plus up to an hour of labour, depending on complications. £100 all in would be OK.

In the London area we would charge our fixed price diagnostic fee of £84 plus about £40-£50 for the new pump.

However this would be for diagnosing what the problem really is first and then doing whatever is necessary to fix it.

Whilst it does sound as if your pump may not be running there are other faults which might have occured and asking someone to just change the pump may not the the solution to your actual problem.

Thanks for the tips - Will contact my local plumber and keep my fingers crossed he doesn't rip me off (not that I would know)...Cheers.

Yes you undo the big screw in the center of the pump.

But be prpaired for some water to come out so have a bowl handy, and keep any water away from the electrics.

After you undo the screw theres a small slot inside which you turn (small screwdriver)

I`d travel up tp Norfolk if I wasnt busy helping my son in their new flat..........Tis our ancestral County ;)
