dimmer switch (sliding)

The dimer switch attached to a brass standard lamp is over heating and the slider is not working - light can work at full on and that is all - but the whole mechanism is overheating - don't know what to do to try and repair it or where to go to try and replace it as light is too expensive to throw away.

Is the dimmer built in, or is it in the flex?

It is separate on a flex - sits on the floor next to the light -

I personally wouldn't try to repair..

i would also ask what watt is the lamp, it may be the lamp is bigger than the dimmer can dim, which is what sounds like has happened
