does a thermostatic valve need to be on the flow pipe? and can they be fitted to any rad?

Depends on the make and model of the TRV. Have you bought it yet as most new valves are Bi directional now (will go on flow or return)

Make sure your system is a straight forward 2 pipe system. If its less than 20 years old it should be.

The older one pipe systems sometimes had a control rad which I have seen fitted with a TRV and then wondered why the rest of the system went cold after the TRV shut down.

You shouldnt fit a TRV on the rad in the room where the room stat is. That is if you have a room stat icon_confused.gif
