Given the cost of Hep2o fittings, why would an amateur not re-use old ones and just renew the O rings?

Yes, I'm a noob.

Reason for not relocating the "whole lot" is fourfold:

1) the combi boiler is directly above the pic
2) the hot water pipes are painted so there was no easy pipe end to compress onto
3) I plan to replace the fusebox with a consumer unit that is NOT directly below the drain cock !
4) no pipe bending gear, and orange shed closing in 10 minutes.

I DID move the cold washer tap from directly above the fusebox. This was my second ever plumbing job and I was bricking myself about water+leccy I can tell you!

As you see in the before shot, the plastic fittings were pushing the gas pipe away from the wall and also obscuring nuts needed for maintenance.

The photo is of the corner of the room, the washing machine actually goes where the camera is, leaving ample room to change fuses, turn off washing machine supply, etc.

Am not knocking him for doing it. Would do the same as I reclaim fittings quite a lot. Just found it amusing as I can identify with his probable reaction when he first saw the job. Along the lines of 'I'm having all those fittings'.

I don't get how it's ok to leave that abomination like that when travelling to the DIY shop anyway to get parts to sort a bit of it, but a cardinal sin to bodge cat 5 and aerial connections?

Other people have things in their lives that aren't to do with washing machines. I daresay that the OP needed to get this work out of the way so that he could do some of those things.

Thanks, I've just (before they went to bed) explained that to my wife and my 9 month old daughter who gets every moment of my time and attention that I can spare and they both agreed that you have a point (livvy's agreement was particularly amusing and totally incomprehensible) - I'm not trying to be an a**e about this, nor criticise anyone for doing or not doing anything, my tone in the original post may have not been ideal - however it is infuriating that if this post had appeared at first in the uk electrics forum where you linked to it from we'd have had half a dozen variously qualified electrical contractors scaremongering all over it by now and recommending that the op gets someone in straightaway to fix the obvious danger to his safety - and to think I was worrying about the earth bonding in my kitchen....

My question was valid, direct, and relevant.

Yours was sarcastic, pointed, and irrelevant.

Mine was about an immovable (that evening) object, being the CU.

Yours was about doing some additional work that, as we now know, wouldn't have even have been possible in the time available.

Not some additional work, just doing the same job slightly differently and then doing some additional work if time allowed - we'll have to agree to disagree on this one if that's ok, I don't see the point in bickering - I think the point that we are both separately trying to make has gotten across - it needs sorting out sooner or later and not just forgetting about - finding the original kitchen fitter (if he works for a firm) wouldn't be a bad idea, someone that needs educating...

Rubbish. The OP has already said that he plans to move the CU. The plumbing can and SHOULD stay, since the boiler is above anyway.

I don't think that anyone has said that it was installed by a "kitchen fitter".
