Hey Ho chaps

Its been a while since I have asked a question so NO micky taking

Our firms apprentice, cracking lad really hard working, has been placed into my "care" has he has progressed to his NVQ3 so its my job to help him with his course work.

I thought this would be easy but his big project is to design a hot and cold water system, central heating system (with an electric boiler) sanitary services etc, So far so easy.

But here is the rub, the water supplie is to be provided by a borehole??? and what I dont know about boreholes could fill volumes, so much for me being Billy Big Bananas eh?

can you fine upstanding chaps help me out so I dont look too much of a div :)

hang on, fitz1, he didn't say "heat is to be provided by a borehole", he said "water is to be provided by a borehole."

i.e. Well-supplied water, not Mains supply.

Used to be quite popular in inner London for breweries and some industrial sites, due to the presure of water in the limestone underlying the clay.

Borehole ie. a hole bored into water bearing strata to enable said water to be pumped out for domestic use :?: so wtf is geo thermal got to do with it   ...........like a well but thinner.............and bored not dug

There should be loads of stuff on the net.

Very roughly you drill a hole which is usually concrete lined. two types of pump, Think Grundfos make well pumps, A surface job or a submersibly job.

Best practice is the survice type, then a pipe to the water level with a ducks foot/non return valve, note this type have to be primed Grrrrrr.

Anyways the water is pumped to a storage tank from where the water gravitates to the outlets, the alternative is a holding tank and a pump set to blast the water under pressure through the building.

Water board have to approve and test the supply.

you may be interest to know that boreholes are very common in America*, my mates employee has one, they can be several hundred feet deep and are NOT lined with concrete, they literalay hire a specialist company to come in and drill a very long hole down, drop in a bore hole pump, this then feeds what you and i would call a tank, they call it a cistern.

* and dont just mean out in the sticks, this person lives in a "seaside town" and they all have their own boreholes. But i didnt want to ask where the waste and sewage goes.

You may recall in some old films you see a "windmill" in the background, oh look a picture

Ok so this one is to pump water for cattle, but they still use them

Not so Breezer.

The bore hole has to be lined or the ducks foot becomes clogged, also they use the pipe down the hole system, as per your pic, very rarely do they use a submersible pump.

I had water from a pumped tube well when I lived in IP8 3HF, perhaps it wasn't deep enough, it tended to leave a brown sediment.

You lot are without a doubt a bunch of toffs and no mistake

gawd bless yer

armed with this lot he is going to think I am the bess ******

I cannot thank you enough boys :)

So you are saying in America everyone has a windmill then? I think not, yes ok, so i may have not mentioned the hole lining (i never thought of that, its not the sort of thing you ask in general chit chat with some one) but as i said my mates employee has their own borehole along with most of their neigbours because they have no mains water.

you may also want to see this ok so its english, but it has an electric pump also you can take your pick of these ELECTRIC bore hole pump suppliers.

At first I did not belive it but it really is true, a lot of Americans have boreholes and electric pumps to supply their water
