Modify an aluminium window to a different size
Reply with quote Thanks

Hi,
I need to have a number of awning windows which are not the standard sizes that window companies normally do. As I only need about 10 windows, I am finding that it is hard to get them made to order without paying a lot of money for them. My question is that is it possible to buy used aluminium awning windows, disassemble them, cut to the new sizes and reassemble? Thanks a lot in advance. Your advises will be very much appreciated as I am about to bid for some used windows on eBay and I am really keen to get my hands dirty on them. Regards, Chuong from OZ icon_razz.gif

i am assuming an "awning window"is a shopfront or large window thus possibly toughend!!!

if its double glazed with sealed units youll need new ones as you cant cut them

and the only way you know with the frame is to look at them and you may need specialist tools to alter/assemble
there is no way off knowing without seeing there construction icon_rolleyes.gif icon_wink.gif

Old glass is also very prone to cracking when you try to cut it (new glass is less brittle).

Hi Big-All and JonhD,

Thanks for your replies. I didn't know that we in Down-Under have some words that are not understood where you are ! Awning window is a window which is open by winding the glass panel outward. The hinges are at the top of the glass panel and the winding mechanic is at the bottom. These windows are for my home's sun room, not shopfront.

Regarding JohnD's comment, did you mean that the glass gets more amd more brittle with it's age?

Thanks and Regards,
Pman

Yes, you will probably not be able to cut it successfully.
