Inset gas fire

Hi. The black covering on the fire above the coals is starting to come off and reveal a white powdery material underneath. Is there some sort of paint I can use to cover the white bit? Or should I be looking at getting a new fire?

High Temp Stove & Fireplace Paint available from most diy shops
