Start from a batten or the worktop and work upwards, the mesh or paper should keep then evenly spaced.
What adhesive are you using, you need a high grab adhesive as the glass mosaic does not absorb water very quickly, something like BAL mosaic fix is good. Also use a small notch trowel, 3mm max.
