Damp spot

Hi all,

I\\\'ve just moved into a house, it is a 1940\\\'s built house and still has what I would consider to be the original roof. I moved in last week and have noticed that there is a damp spot on one of the walls in the spare room (which is an outer wall). This is adjacent to an old chimney breast which I can guess was the old \\\'wash house\\\' chimney that is no longer in the house. The chimney breast is also quite damp. The plaster has not blown though and with the heating having been put on, the wetness/dampness has decreased. On the outside, it has rendering which has been done over the last year I\\\'d say but there is a spot where the wooden soffit meets with the outer chimney breast. I\\\'m not sure if this could be the problem as there seems to be a bit of a hole and it is close by the wet spot on the inside. Is this somethign that I can cover up and see what happens or should I get someone in to look at it? Obviously as I\\\'ve just moved in I\\\'m a bit strapped for cash but with the obvious, I ought to get this sorted before it starts costing alot more! Does anyone have a ny suggestions or have I just answered it myself?!?!

Does sound like the chimney flashing need looking at, also have a look at guttering joints or any broken roof tiles. It might be cheaper to get a roofer in (get a couple of quote) if you diy you will need scaffolding etc which will add more cost
