Painting staircase

Hi there people,

I am just about to paint my staircase an i would just like to know which is the best way to go about it, Will it be best to have a ladder at one end an a plank or 2 of thick wood so i can easyely walk down it,

Much apprieciated if you would just give me your tips on the way you would do this
