I think I have a blockage. When I run the cold tap fast into the kitchen sink, an unplesant toilet smell comes up form the sink plughole. The smell is not there unless water is run in the sink. Its all new pipes under the sink as I recently had a dishwasher fitted. The sink waste pipe drains into the soil stack from the bathroom above. Anyone know how/why the toilet smells are coming up the sink wastepipe and where the blockage might be? Would ordinary drain unblocker put down the kitchen sink reach the blockage?

Probably something to do with the plumbing in of the dishwasher then.
Smell is probably getting through because the trap is losing its water seal.
Any chance of posting a picture or two so we can see whats going on.

Sounds like you could have a partial blockage in the soil stack.

The stack pipe fills with water and causes a partial vacuum as it falls drawing water out of the sink trap.

Try a pack of caustic soda down the sink and leave overnight without flushing toilet.

Also try the caustic soda in the overflow pipe of the sink
