insulating the roof

i am in the process of considering laying boards on the joists to create storage space. after reading all the previous suggestions i am considering running 3" x 1" timber at right angles across the existing joists for strength and to allow air flow and to keep the wires away from the insulation. what my main problem is that i have just roof tiles and nothing else. i believe i need to leave a 50mm gap between the tiles and the insulation for airflow. so what do i put between the rafters?? what goes up first?? what do you all recommend??
i have heard mention of waterproof membrane or something!?!? thanks all!!

A lot depends what you want to do in the loft, the flooring idea is okay but I would leave the roof rafters insulation alone as you may increase condensation problem depending what you wan to do up there, is it just for storage?

WILL BE IN THERE FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS EACH DAY SO IT NEEDS TO BE FREE FROM DUST AND WIND, A PROBLEM THAT I HAVE GOT AT THE MOMENT. BEFORE IT WAS EMPTIED OUT ALL THE ITEMS IN THERE WERE COVERED IN DIRTY FILTHY 'DUST' FROM OUTSIDE THROUGH THE TILES. HOPE SOME ONE CAN HELP!!??

An unfelted roof will always be filthy. One day perhaps you will have it re-roofed and can fix that.

You might think about making a sort of "box" as a room to sit in while you are up there hiding from your wife.

You can get a reflective bubble film that you can staple to the rafters, it is supposed to provide thermal insulation and would also keep the dirt out, but I haven't used it.

thanks for that link!!

daft question here!!

will i need to first put up the underlay followed by insulation (looks like giant rolls of thick foil) or can i just use the 'foil' insulation stuff. will this 'foil' stuff keep out the moisture or is that the job of the underlay?

could i just use the underlay or will this not help with insulation?

any ideas?

why not use king span down the rake, with a viz membrane.
then put 150mm fiber roll in the up stands(on netting)
king span can be friction fitted

I have used 8' x 4' pegboards sheets (can get smaller sheets size) on my loft which allow for ventilation and seems to keep the dusts off as well
