dishwasher plumbing

I\\\'m looking to buy a dishwasher but the washing machine is using the existing water feed and drains under the sink. Can the washing machine and dishwasher both share the same plumbing and how do do you combine them?

Er, this is a small question with a huge answer, because it depends on your existing installation - you might need to modify just a little, or quite a lot.

If you post a photo of the waste and trap under your sink then it will be possible to help you, but otherwise you'd be better off going to your local plumbers' merchant and asking them to show you ways of connecting two appliance drain hoses into one trap. An even better method is to install a standpipe for each appliance.
