Standing Water in Drain
Reply with quote Thanks

The drain which takes away the roof rainwater, kitchen sink and bath wastewater was recently blocked causing water overflow and also seep into cellar.
Now unblocked I still have standing water in the drain about a foot below the grid. It doesnt appear to get any higher and the cellar is not flooding.
About 3 foot below the grid the drain bends and goes off to the sewer (I presume).
Is this standing water normal or is there still a blockage problem with my drain ?

Thanks in advance,
Rob

No, its normal. Its the water laying in the 'u' bend forming a trap to prevent smells coming up through it.

Hey Ray,

I have a similar setup, only I've got a problem - the 'trap' water gets stagnant over night (or anytime when there's no water being used for a few hours) and starts to stink. Always a problem in the summer as the drain is in our lean-to which gets hot. Have you got any advice about how to stop it smelling? I've tried bleach etc. but it doesn't stop the problem. Is there any way to clear the drain so there's no water in the trap so that I can clean it out properly?

I saw someone else mention that they pulled out the 'trap' in the u-bend, cleaned it then put it back and the same problem went away. I can only just get my fingers in the out pipe (because I can't reach, not because it is blocked) and can't feel anything there - how far in would this mysterious trap be?

Thanks
