The distance the bottom of one tile overlaps the top of the next.
 
Actually it is the distance the bottom of a slate overlaps the next but one below - slates are always double lapped.

tis true. plain tiles and real slates that are butted, as opposed to interlocking, do double lap. interlocking tiles however, weather their edges so only need a single headlap, usually a minimum of 75mm.
