What is the purpose of the tape around glazed units? And should it be removed before being installed into the window frame?
Thanks.

i think it's to help keep moisture from getting inside the unit, no need to remove it for fitting.

Leave it on!
The tape has 2 purposes, firstly, it makes the unit 'friendlier' to handle and secondly it does also act as secondary (or even 3rd) seal in some cases.

Also as a sun block to preserve the sealant between the glass (should be aluminium tape but most use black 'gaffer' tape)
