me and the missus had a go at putting lining paper up, after getting annoyed a bit with a difference of opinion on what was the best way to put it up, we went for the horizontal way. It worked out far greater then we imagined, and the result is really good.

But - and there always is a but, we have a 3mm 'gap' which is about 12" long where the wall isnt quite straight in one place.

question: whats the best way to fix this gap?

many thanks

A nice fine surface filler should do the job nicely.

Horizontal is the way to go IMHO.

FF is right you can fill the join..but IMO some ready mixed fillers set like concrete and take a lot of rubbing down...you might end up scratching the surface of the paper a bit.

You can paint the lining paper first if you like with one coat of emulsion (not 'one coat emulsion')

Fill the joint with ordinary filler dont overfill it to much, sand it and the whole wall down with 100 grade abrasive paper roll over the filled bit first and allow it to dry...this will give you a bit of 'texture' to match the existing and seal the filler

Then do your last coat.
