Can you please help me connect a dimmer switch?

I have the following wires:
1) RED
2) BLACK
3) GREEN (Already connected to Earth)

I need to connect the Dimmer (60-400W) switch with the following connection points:
1) L1
2) L2
3) ~(with an arrow through it)

Do I connect the RED wire to L1 and the black wire to ~ and leave L2 unconnected?

you need to put brown sleeving/tape on the black to show its a live though. and if its a metal face plate dimmer, you need to connect the earth from the face plate to the back box too.

Hi

Just a quick question. I have exactly the same wiring as above and am replacing with the same type of switch. I tried to re wire as described and did it in the following order - connected the earth, then connected the red and got a shock...... suddenly realised i had not ppulled the fuse.....

If i had continued (with the electric off) and then connected black would it have worked when i turned the electric back on and would it no longer give the shock?

Lesson well and truly learnt....

Thanks

Put the old switch back (isolate/turn off supply) if it works, (supply on) you have fried and need a new dimmer.

Thanks, old ones already back on and working.... if i get a new dimmer and install with the power off when i turn the power on am i right in thinking it should not give a shock?

Why would you get a shock if you have wired it up correctly?

PS Darwin was right
