Hello experts, I'm new to the forum and would really appreciate some advice on my floor-restoration project.

I had a wall removed between two rooms which have a lovely (but old and in need of TLC) herringbone woodblock parquet floor which I now want to repair and restore to its former glory. As part of the wall removal, a steel frame had to be insterted which meant removing a strip of the wood blocks measuring ~1m wide by 3.5 long and digging a trench across the floor which has since been filled/concreted and screeded.

What I have now is a patch of bare concrete and a stack of the old parquet blocks waiting to be re-laid prior to sanding and finishing. The blocks have a lot of bitumen left on them. I also removed a few from another area which I will cover with tiles so I will have plenty of blocks for the job. (I hope!!)

1st question - What do I need to do to the concrete/screed floor as preparation?

2nd question - What is the best way of re-laying the blocks - adhesive, bitumen or something else? Recommendations for the most practical DIY product welcome!

3rd question - Do I need to clean the old bitumen off the blocks or does this depend on what I stick them down with?

I am sure I will have more questions in the future, but any advice on the above would be greatly appreciated!!

clean old glue off and make sure concrete is dry before fitting! bitumen isn't used any more so need to source a solid wood floor glue (urethane or something)

Many thanks mattysupra!! The concrete is drying nicely and it'll be another couple of weeks before I will actually start this part of the job (there's plenty to do before then!!!)

Do you have a specific glue product you could recommend as well as a supplier? I guess this will determine whether I need to do anything on the concrete prior to laying or will these glues stick to concrete without any need for sealing or preparing it otherwise?

Hi Mika

As long as you remove as much bitumen off the blocks any normal parquet adhesvie (lecol5500, Styccobond B92) will do. Just be aware that the bonding time (due to bitumen residue on the blocks) will be a bit longer. If your concrete base is sound (and dry!) there's no need to add any other material first

Superb, thank you very much WoodYouLike!! I will stick ;) (ha ha - pardon the pun) to your and mattysupra's advice. I reckon I will start laying the blocks in two week's time so the concrete should definitely have dried by then - if not, I'll wait.

Thanks for the suggested products as well. The easiest one for me to get hold of would be "L16 Woodbond" from Screwfix - do you know if this would do the job as well as the two products you suggested?

Mika, can't see if that would do the job, never used it ourselves so no experience to share.
Perhaps matty has?

Fair enough, I actually did some searching and found a local supplier for Lecol 5500 who also turned out to be a bit cheaper than Screwfix so that's what I'm going to use.

Many thanks again!!
