Staircase

Please can someone settle an argument. A friend of mine is selling their house having refurbished it. They have no handrail at all and the stairs are in the lounge. I think this is against regulations and may hamper any sale. They say it's OK. Please advise!

Your friend is wrong and you are right.

Approved Document Part K says that any change in level of 600mm or greater should be protected by a handrail. It also says that all stairs should be protected by a handrail except to the bottom 2 risers.

You have to bear in mind that there are no Building Regs police. These things tend to only get picked up by building surveys, and then the buyer can just allow for fitting a handrail.

I have noticed that removing handrails seems to have become a bit of a trend. Not sure why?
