A few months back I pebble dashed the entire front of new extension and its actually quite easy. The mix we used was 1 part cement, 2 parts lime 1, part very fine gravel and 1 part larger gravel to match the existing dash on rest of the house. Ensure the mix is fairly gooey.
A "scutting" trowel was used to litterly slap in on the wall, window was covered with ply, any that didin't stick was just mixed back in with rest.
For your small area you could probably do it by hand.
It's not easy ! The mortar have to be the right moisture for the stones to stick to. Also the stones have to be wash with water and dried before you flip it upward approx 45 degree.
