hole width

am soon to erect 8ft 4*4inch posts obviously going 2ft in the ground whats the average width needed and does the firmness of the soil affect it(is there a set width whatever)

keep the hole as small as possible. the more the soil is disturbed the more it will move with wind loading. use a trenching spade to get it as small as possible.
