I have tried powders too (after switching from tablets coz of the same problem) and when the load has finished, I open the door to find the powder has formed into a solid tablet and my dishes aren't clean and all gritty. Any ideas? I am going mad!!
Sounds like a water supply problem. Check the jets are not blocked when you run the cycle. Take out the dispenser and see if plenty of water is coming out, (you may need to put down some towels)
check the spring mechanism on the soap dispenser. Close the catch and release manually. You may find resistance or not opening. The spring mechanism may be slightly askew. Twist back a tad, close and release manually until it releases freely.
