Wooden floor stains and varnish

Hi
Does anyone have any links where I can compare the finished article of the various Stains / Varnishes. I'm about to sand my floors and want to get the colour right but am not very impressed with the samples given in the various diy shops.

afraid your asking for the impossible

the only way you know what will happen when you put stain on is to try it

unless your bit of sample was from the same tree and was treated the same way it has little chance of being close

you have several thousand shades through each group of trees
all wood changes tone with exposure to the sun
different parts of the same tree will absorb stain at different levels so giving shade variations
