Best option with wooden flooring re pets and kids:
no varnish or lacquer, but a HardWaxOil finish. Isn't glossy, isn't slippery and if there are small damages it can be locally repaired (i.e. lightly sanded - if needed - and new HWO finish applied) without ending up with a 'patchy' floor.

As long as it is hardwaxoil colour than it's al right to apply a second coat of clear hardwaxoil (or if you want a darker colour apply two coats of coloured HWO)
