Will my dog's claws wreck a varnished or stained floor?

Hi

I'm contemplating the renovation of the lovely parquet flooring underneath our carpet but the only thing putting me off is the family pet!

He has the tendency to tear around and I'm paranoid that his claws would leave the surface scratched beyond belief.

Has anyone else had to deal with this problem? Is there a suitable stain or varnish out there that would be tough enough to withstand scratching?

Thanks for your reply.

His claws aren't sharp by any means, he just runs around quite a bit like a loon.

So obviously a silk matt finish as opposed to a gloss would be better just in case?

Has anyone had any experience of dogs on stained or varnished floors?

Best option with wooden flooring re pets and kids:

no varnish or lacquer, but a HardWaxOil finish. Isn't glossy, isn't slippery and if there are small damages it can be locally repaired (i.e. lightly sanded - if needed - and new HWO finish applied) without ending up with a 'patchy' floor.

Claws may not effect a hardwood but they definitely affect pine by pulling chunks up over a period of time.

The Hard Wax Oil solution looks ideal Woody... am I right in thinking that I can stain the floor any colour first before applying the Oil?

no idea myself, but useing some other rpoor sole who posted recently who did something similar, try a test patch first

As long as it is hardwaxoil colour than it's al right to apply a second coat of clear hardwaxoil (or if you want a darker colour apply two coats of coloured HWO)

And Breezer is right: test first.
