I bought some switched FCU's expecting to find a knockout for cord outlet. I was wrong. The fitting has a shiny chrome frontplate but there is nowhere for the flex to emerge. The fitting has a backplate which *does* have a socket outlet.

Is it acceptable practice to drill a 10mm hole into the front of fcu frontplate, stick in a rubber grommet, and pass the flex into the fitting through this ?

Flex outlet, not socket outlet! Socket outlet is not something you will ever find on an FCU. Plastic FCUs normally have a knockout for flex, metal ones obviously cant have this option, so you will find that you can by them with and without flex outlet.
