sounds like the latch return spring has broke problem now is it may fall into the workings and jam up the door gear totally usually when its locked.
you could try removing the whole door espag. ( locking strip) and seeing if the case has screws to access the gearing some are riveted others are screwed. then carefully unscrew and remove cover and I mean carefully or the lot will spring out, then its krypton factor time.
you may find the broken piece and remove. you cannot obtain the springs separately any more so you will eventually need a new espag.
when removing lock you will need your key in and turned slightly to remove cylinder. best of luck.
