Hi

Am in a bit of a panic about our new kitchen (3 months old) .... We have oiled oak worktops and around the sink there are black marks developing - Also it looks as though the worktop is warping

Does it sound like its not been fitted right ?

Any advice gratefully received

Thanks

3 months old should by now have 3 coats underneath and several on top[around 14]
and a coat every day for a week a coat every week for a month then 2 times a year wiping all excess off

do not use steel including scourers on oak as the tannin in the oak will react with the steel

hmmm maybe its not oil then ? I think it had 2 or 3 coats at the beginning (on top only) and nothing underneath

The thing is the sink was put in before anything was applied to the worktop, so I can't really see how a watertight seal was possible

And another product never to use on Oak is ammonium: this will react with the tannin also and turn it dark (smoked Oak is made this way - in an air-tight room, so don't try this at home!)

you need to apply oil on both sides otherwise one side will expand and contract more than the other with different moisture levels

can you get your fingers underneath to feel for moisture ??

While on that subject, the same applies to paint or stain on doors. Especially cupboard doors, apply paint or oil to inside as well as outside.

Formica/melamine board as well, always back the reverse to stop it warping, although not many people traditionally Formica surfaces like we used too.

Steve.
