Preparing Metal Surfaces
Difficulty Cost

   Contents
  Introduction

Always prime metal surfaces. It is essential to prepare the surface thoroughly beforehand. Insufficient preparation can lead to rust eating through the metal surface, leaving holes for further penetration and decay.

It is important to wear gloves and goggles for protection when dealing with tiny slithers of metal. If the surface appears greasy wipe with a cloth containing white spirit. Use a wire brush to remove rust, followed by emery paper. Use an epoxy based filler, which is a rust inhibitor, to fill any crevices. To prevent rust, apply the metal primer as soon as the surface is prepared. There are numerous types of primer available, some such as zinc chromate are suitable for metal surfaces. Refer to Using the correct sealer and primer for more details.
