Preparing Walls and Ceilings
Difficulty Cost

   Contents
  Method

If the surface is already covered with emulsion, clean the surface with sugar soap and water. If the surface is uneven and worn in places, it may be advisable to remove the paper and redecorate first. Refer to Removing wallpaper for more details.

It may be possible to wipe the surfaces with a damp cloth before applying the new coat. Remember to cover all furnishings and fittings beforehand to avoid damage due to splattering. It is advisable to remove ornate wall and ceiling lights if possible. If this proves too difficult, remove shades and try to cover lights before painting nearby. Never cover lights which are switched on or where bulbs are still hot.
