Choosing the tiles

  Choosing the tiles

There are various materials available when you consider tiling a wall. The surface of the wall must be repaired if necessary, removing wallpaper or treating powdery, flaking paint. The wall must be a stable base, as flat as possible, clean and dry.

Mirror Tiles
Use of mirror tiles can change the look of a room by creating more light reflecting into the room and giving a spacious airy effect.

See also Ceramic wall tiles for more detailed information and Laying tiles for instruction on how to lay tiles.

Once you have decided on the tile, note its length and width and measure the wall carefully. Measure its length and divide it by the length of one tile. Round up the number of tiles to the next whole number. Now measure the height of the room and divide that by the width of the tile, round up the number of tiles to the nearest whole number. Multiply the two whole numbers together. This will give the number of tiles required to tile the wall. Alternatively try our online Tile Estimator to calculate this for you,

It is always wise to buy a few extra tiles, in case you crack or break a tile while cutting it to fit, or to keep as a spare in case of accidental damage in the future. Laying tiles on a wall is similar to the method for laying them on a floor.
