In most cases, swimming is more expensive than track and field (athletics). While athletics requires minimal gear and can often be practiced for free in public spaces, swimming relies heavily on year-round club memberships, expensive facility access, and specialized equipment.

Once you reach International competitive level you're probably financially supported by UKSport.
I say probably because you have to be nominated by the specific national sporting body. You can't apply yourself so that support is not automatic.

At lower levels athletes are often supported by private sponsors.

Because it’s not always a level playing field. Right now, the opportunities to get involved in sport and activity – and reap the rewards of being active – depend too much on your background, your gender, your bank balance and your postcode.
