I've just done a test - I've introduced air into the 'arch'. That's stopped the siphoning and water no longer flows up the pipe. I have a theory. I think that, while the ball valve wasn't working, the level got so high that the arch got full enough for a siphon to start and, once started it...

Just one question - the water can only flow up the pipe because its end is below the surface. Should it be? Could that be starting a siphoning process? If it were out of the water, would it just suck air in?

I've turned the pump down to II - it makes no difference. The pipes are i bit hidden - it'll take me a while to trace them. I'll get back to you when I have.

The pump is a 15-60. It's set to III (maximum).

brumylad & oilman: yes, water is flowing up the pipe which arches over the header tank - spooky eh? I'll have to poke about a bit to get the other info. I'll also double-check all the radiators are working. I'll get back to you.

I don't know whether it's just started. I only discovered it when I changed the valve on the header tank to stop it overflowing. (It was overflowing before the new pump - the valve was just worn out.)

The new pump is a Grundfos 'G-plus'. I've checked that the arrows are pointing the right way but would it be possible that it's flowing the wrong way if it's been wired wrongly? Would that cause the problem? Sorry to ask stupid questions but I'm just an ignorant member of the public! :?

If the system is working OK, am I correct in saying that the header tank should not circulate continuously - it should just get some expansion when the system heats up shouldn't it? If so, does that mean the problem's not as simple as the two pipes being connected to the wrong ends of the header...

No, not with the pump off. That would mean I've invented perpetual motion and I would be rich (which I'm not)!

It flows continuously. What else do you need to know?

My CH header tank has been overflowing for a while so I have just replaced the valve. While checking everything afterwards, I found that water is flowing INTO the expansion pipe (and presumably flowing out of the pipe at the bottom). Is this normal? I had a new pump fitted recently and I've...
