probably a blockage?checked the rads have water in them, check that the expansion tank in the loft has water in it, also if it does have water in it, tie the ballcock up so it does not refill straighway pen all the rad valves and lockshields with the system off including the zone control valves...

ok I had one in the front room that had not worked for months, I am not a plumber but it is more than likely to be gunk in the rad, what you suggested is a good idea, but if that fails the only way my non working rad worked was to drain and drain the system over and over, I also back flushed it...

Mad situtuation, have an open vented system with a pottertorn wall hung boiler downstairs not sure if itis combi etc, last year we had the circulating pump in the airing cabinet upstairs replaced as the boiler kept overheating and cutting out.....pump was not in a good way and gunked up...
