Clearly, my image of Cowell being a paragon of musical philanthropy has been misplaced. I feel so foolish.

Why do people watch this tripe?
Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Nana Mouskouri, Genesis, Jean Michel Jarre, Brenda Lee, Depeche Mode (to name but a few) have all managed to make a career for themselves and sell squillions of records without appearing on some lame TV talent show, so why do people take such an interest in these no-hopers, who (if they are very lucky) will have an extremely short lived career as a 'musician'
And when the winner of the series finally gets to release their album, why do people buy it? Do they not realise that in 3 months time they will be sick to death of it (after having played it 11 times) and that they wouldn't even be able to give it away to Oxfam as they'll already have 42 copies gathering dust on the shelf at 20p a pop <-no pun intended.

Music is art. Pop is product.
x-factor, eurovision and all the rest of it simply have no relevance or meaning to a music lover. I don't evan understand why people mention such things to me in conversation.
I'm trying not to be elitist, I abhor snobbery and besides, it blinds people and makes them little better if not worse than pop fans (at least pop fans sole objective is to enjoy what they listen to, which is about as pure as it gets).
But what it comes down to it, the difference between art and pop is the difference between hanging a great picture on your wall and the wallpaper that surrounds it. Sure, the wallpaper might be nice, but it's forgettable, has no passion or soul, and is produced merely to fill an empty void in an inoffensive manner.

Then why say:
You come across as being a bit snobby if i may say so.
I know it can seem that way, which is why I point it out.
I love loads of music, mostly goth, industrial and metal, loads of underground and rare stuff but loads more stuff slips in like dance and wotnot and some quite mainstream acts like pulp, fatboy slim.
you should listen to what sounds good to you, personally. You cannot be told what you like, what makes you feel good.
therefore I don't understand, on a fundamental level, what relevance or meaning a top ten has, or why anyone should care, and these weird little pop competitions like eurovision and x factor, in pursuit of a predefined so called ideal sound, serve only to iron out any difference or defining characteristics which results in bland, manufactured product, and are the antithesis of music as art/expression.
In the same way, our cars all look the same because design concepts are subjected to critical analysis and in doing so lose any identity, as there's always someone who'll dislike some slightly radical aspect.
