Kitchen light please help

All the replies have given good advice and the most likely answer is that the feed, which may come from another light position, has been lost, this could be due to a broken or poor connection at this other light position.

I agree that a neon type tester is not a good device to use, I have seen an indication from a metal teapot in the middle of a table!!

A propriety test device, meter or voltage probe should be used but the bulb holder and light bulb can also give good indication of live feed when testing between a good earth and the wiring.

If you can access above the ceiling, trace the wiring back to the previous location and check the connections there.

It's a neutral fault I'd wager

Two P/Ls suggests that there is likely to be another lighting point/switch supplied from this position, if this is the only point of failure on your circuit there'll probably be an upstream loom with a loose neutral in it.

Is it in an extension to the original property BTW?

Yes, it was a house and then converted into 3 flats in 2002.
The flat is on the second and third floor (converted loft)

Amazing how you can determine that from a kitchen light.

Above the kitchen light is a small loft space in the eaves with
rockwool between the joists.(no floor boards)

Is this the best place to start looking for the faulty neutral?
 
ok then, I've investigated the loft above kitchen;
I found the following;

- Couldn't see any break or damaged cables.
- I noticed the earth coming from the ceiling rose was going knowhere...!
- I traced the wires back as shown in the pix and they ended up going
down to the fuse box..

Not really sure what to do now.. any suggestions?

You need to go to to the point directly above the faulty light in the loft and identify the two cables, i.e. which one goes to the switch and which is the feed. Once you have identified the feed cable follow it to wherever it goes and then inspect any joints or connections that you might find.

It could be a lost live or Neutral, in your wiring a broken red or Black wire.

There are two basic methods of wiring lighting installations, back-loop or grouped connections, it looks like your system is back-looped, the advantage with back-loop is that all the connections are accessible from below.

Couldn't do it yesterday or today as ended up with Pudsey in Leeds!
