Problem - new all enclosed shower unit. Realised that it has a clear side panel, the one facing the part of the wall which needs to be hidden (no tiling/some services/brick etc - not good to look at).

Even if I tiled the wall, it would get dusty/full of spiders and you would view that throught the side of the 6mm huge clear shatterproof glass pane!

So - I want to roller paint the OUTSIDE of the glass pane with 2 coats of gloss white, something brilliant like my white Tile Paint. The inside of the shower is unaffected and because I'm viewing it from the back, it should be flat and brush mark free.

My query is - because when the unit is fitted I can't get to that side, will the paint come off? Do I need to do any special preparation? Can anyone advise me on the best paint, or a better method?

All I can find on google is about water washable and artist painting on glass where they then bake the glass.....

Help! Greg.

Don't do it, it'll look shi*e. Can't you make good the wall, and get a suitable enclosure?

Imagine the back of your shower is clear. Even if you make good the wall, 2 years later behind the glass is full of dust and spiders and you stare at that.....

This unit boxes in that corner of the room. I can't get to it. I need it to be white, like the rest of the shower, but it's a glass panel. In reality they should have had this panel whilte like the back, but it isn't, so hey ho....

My painted tiles look great....

Can't you pack the wall out with mdf or plasterboard until it touches the panel? Most of these enclosures have 10mm adjustment tolerance so you could fit it hard against.

The bottom of the unit sticks out quite a way, then there is skirting etc. So maybe, but a bigish job that I really don't want as I don't want to be able to see through the panel, just like I don't want to see through the back panel when I'm inside (but luckily the back panel is plastic).

Thanks for the suggestion though, keep them coming! I REALLY hate that glass panel....

Well... given that

a) I have a glass panel
b) my goal, is not to see through it
c) it must be white

What can be suggested?

I have seen glass whcih has had vinyl stuck on the other side and such and that looked just like a plain white panel, looked great. But I have no idea about vinyl so hence I thought why not paint.

But, hey, if i'm wrong i'm wrong. how can I do it?

Greg.

It'll still look shi*e.

Do it properly. Make good the wall, tile, use a 3 sided enclosure. Really I honestly believe it won't look good with what you are proposing.

Okay I can do that.

But please, I don't want to see though the side of the shower. I personally dislike it, everything else other than the front is boxed in white, I don't want this one window to stare out of at some tiles or whatever else I put behind it, regardless of how nicely it was done.

What I'm trying to say is, if the floor in front of your sofa was for some reason glass, I could say do it properly and landscape under your house. But you may just not want to see down beyond your feet. I don't want to see out of this enclosure, it's an enclosure. the glass front is all I want, I'm happy with that.

Maybe if painting is naff I should cut a section from the white 3mm UPVC sheets I have and somehow bond it on round the edges. Not sure what bonding agents stick to UPVC though. At least it's white and very glossy.

what about those stickers for van signage to block out the windows? if they can deal with the external elements on a van they should last in your shower.

if you really, really wanna paint it i would use the oil based Zinnsers it sticks to pvc and galvaised metal so i imagin it would stick to glass. I think a brush would give a smother finnish if you laid it off lightly but if you must use a roller i would suggest a mohair one.

You could you remove the glass from the offending panel and replace with Spaboard/Aquapanel.
