No lockshield valve?

Hi.

My house has thermostatic valves fitted on some of my rads. Already fitted when I moved in. I thought I'd see if balancing could help with little or no heat getting to an upstairs radiator.

1) On one of my ground floor radiators the valve at the opposite end to the TRV has all the appearance of being an ordinary manual valve. There is no cap. It has arrows pointing clockwise towards "shut". Only when I turned this off completely did I get the rad to cool down. Before my last quarter turn of the valve the rad was still hot.

What sort of set-up have I got here?

2) On another rad where one valve opposite to the TRV certainly seems to be a lockshield valve the nut is (before I did anything) turned completely to the right (clockwise). That rad should be off. Yes? But the heat flows through.

1. It is an ordinary valve, and you have seen how little it needs to be open to stay hot. Very few "professionals" know this little gem judging by what I come across.

And so you get balancing instructions to "close the LS valve on ground floor rads about halfway and leave the upstairs valves fully open".

What sort of valve is the one on the left please?

This is the upstairs radiator I can't get much heat into.

Any turn at all anti-clockwise of the left-hand valve produces a leak. It is tight as it can go clockwise.

I'm guessing it's not really a valve at all. It's function?

That is a Yorkshire twin-entry rad valve. It is either the valve sludged or the spreader inside your radiator, take off rad and flush spreader. Leak is caused by the o'rings in the rad valve spindle being worn.

Fooling around with the lockshield valve on other radiators I'm now getting some heat into my previously cold radiator.

How am I managing this when the radiator's left-hand (lockshield?) valve is turned hard to the right and needs to stay that way or it will leak? Shouldn't that stop all heat flow into the radiator?
