Hello. Problem situation is a Myson Apollo (30Si). It has been in use for probably about ten years. Although working fine, it has started to make a lot of noise. On opening up, it certainly seems to be the fan assembly that is the culprit. The bearings, etc. are free running, but there seems to be vibration on the mounting. For example, applying a small amount of pressure to one of the three rubber mounting sections around the fan / blower wheel assembly cuts the vibration/noise completely.

The fan itself was replaced two years ago and there does not seem to be any problem with that. This suggests to me that the blower wheel / fan assembly is become slightly unbalanced or similar. Does anyone have any experience of rectifying this sort of problem?

Thanks in advance.

might just want a service and a good clean
the fan has small peices of metal clipped to some of the blades to balance it might be 1 adrift :)

Thank you for that Kev.

Has been cleaned, etc. as per your suggestion and also the mountings on the fan assembly tightened which has reduced the noise / vibration a fair bit. However, it is still noisy compared to "before".

No bits of metal clipped to the fan blade were found at all, but the fan does seem to be spinning (as I would put it) "slightly off-centre" which does seem to be the root cause. Can this be cured, or would it be simpler to just have the whole assembly replaced? I wonder if the whole assembly can be bought for such an old bolier?

Hi all,

This episode has a happy ending!

After closer examination at the weekend I noted that the fan was clearly spinning off centre and made a mild knocking sound when moving it around by hand (with the power turned off, of course!)

Taking advice from elsewhere in this forum, I contacted Control Engineering Technology on Monday morning (www.cetltd.co.uk on the web) and spoke to an extremely helpful gentleman. Reconditioned fan assembly was delivered to me yesterday and it took about 30 minutes to fit. Lovely and quiet and boiler now purring like a pussy! Old unit to be returned by post tomorrow - total cost about £60.

Very satisying to be able to sort it out myself and good value. Whilst I have only used CET the once, I received excellent service and would recommend them as a cost-efective way of replacement electrical components in older systems.

Thanks to Kev for the advice earlier.

Best wishes to all,
D.
